Here on the TEC Committee, we would like to give you an inside look at some of this year's TEC speakers. We have hand-picked each and every one of them to ensure you have the most informative and memorable breakout sessions. As you may have noticed, the theme for TEC 2012 is Dare to Connect! Well, we would like to get those connections off to a great start by introducing you to some of your guest speakers.
This week we chatted with Trevor Lui, Director of Operations and Sustainability at the International Centre in Toronto. Trevor is a passionate leader and extremely charismatic, so we know his presentation on creating sustainable yet profitable events is a must-attend for TEC attendees.
Here are a few words from Trevor on his session entitled: From Fad to Fact, How to Get Started on Producing a Sustainable Event with Profit.
“Believe me when I tell you "Green" & "Sustainable" events are not going away. Pessimists tend to think that there is paradox to achieving the Triple Bottom Line. Truth be told, like everything else, People, Planet and Profit are as consumer driven as food quality and accommodations. This session will provide you insight on how to accommodate the growing sustainable needs without sacrificing profit or increasing expenses. Remember, there is no "finish line" to sustainability.”
In case you want to get to know Trevor a little better, here are Five Things You Didn't Know About Trevor Lui. (Hint: You could use these as conversation starters at TEC if you want to connect with him!)
QUESTION #1: Best event you have ever attended?
"I've been fortunate to both attend and produce so many hundreds of events through the years. But I have to say that one of the most memorable ones I co-produced and attended was a star studded charity gala hosted be David Foster a few years back at the Fallsview Casino. 3-days of spectacular decadence working with the best in decor, design, food and beverage options including menu chats with the likes of Chefs Mark McEwan, Frank Selg and Jan Stulp. Even more exciting was having the opportunity to hob nob with some great stars and legends including, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Paul Anka, Babyface and Sinbad to name a few. All that along with camera crews shooting it every movement for the Food Network's "The Heat." It was quite intense but rewarding!"
QUESTION #2: Favorite thing about working in the events industry?
"I never stop learning, that's what's great. You're only as good as your last event and none are ever the same. That and the amazing people I've met through the years. Now I'm in a point in my career that I can pay it back and that's rewarding in itself. "
QUESTION #3: Number one trend to follow right now (industry or otherwise)?
"Socialize and mobilize, it isn't going away"
QUESTION #4: Where would we find you on a Friday night?
"I'm a spur of the moment kind of a guy and Friday is reserved for family night (with my wife and daughter) so we explore cool little spots for food, drink and/or dessert. Toronto is becoming a great food city and I want my little seven year old to learn and appreciate what we have in this city. "
QUESTION #5: Favorite quote?
"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not any man’s greed."
-Mahatma Gandhi
